Artifact: The Webspiration Chart created to demonstrate my understanding of the stages of the Hero Journey in Campbell’s Theory of the Monomyth.

One of the prominent studies of the past semester was Joseph Campbell’s Theory of the Monomyth, or the Hero Journey. I chose Marlin, from the Pixar film Finding Nemo to illustrate my understanding of this theory. To identify the aspects of the Hero Journey in the film, the first part of my process was to re watch it. While watching the movie, I took notes when each phase of the Hero Journey was initiated, and how each phase was manifested in the plot.

This project served as a very basic way to demonstrate our knowledge of Campbell’s Monomyth, because it entailed simple identification of its steps. I was surprised that this assignment only consisted of a Webspiration Chart, it seemed like a light assignment, though that is hardly a weakness weakness. I found it quite interesting and wish we had discussed such things at greater length.

The most challenging aspect of this assignment was definitely determining the beginning of a phase, or whether or not a certain event was in fact a phase of the Hero Journey at all. I handled this obstacle by referring directly to my packet and making decisions on the importance of an event. From this assignment, I discovered the importance and interest of the basic elements of literature and writing.
