The Creative Piece

The student will experiment with different genres and styles in writing short pieces with powerful diction and creative premises.

Reflection

Artifact 1: A Creative Piece Interactive Reflection Journal on the bedroom of an anonymous character intended to use powerful language to convey his identity.

The main rule for the “Whose Bedroom Is It?” Creative Piece was not to reveal the character or his identity. This made the assignment more difficult to approach; backward, even. So, I went about writing the piece in a different way. I made a list of objects and characteristics, which I wanted the reader to easily notice. Then, I created another list of traits that were meant to be more subtle and hinting.

I found this assignment’s unique premise to be refreshing and interesting. I believe this piece is more directly related to the objective than any other Creative Piece we have done this year, because of the necessity of powerful, descriptive language, as well as an idea that was creative enough so as not to be mundane and obvious. I feel that this assignment was a great writing exercise, because it gave us a chance to view creative writing from a different side. This new perspective is valuable to an unpracticed writer, and I found it stimulating, not to mention enjoyable.

For this assignment, the most challenging aspect was finding the perfect words to describe an unseen character, which is the essence of creative writing. All elements in the bedroom of the homosexual teenager I created had to contribute to the revelation of his social and familial conflict, as well as his comfort with who he is.  I was able to overcome this challenge by writing and rewriting each sentence, in an effort to capture the exact image I saw in my mind.

During the process of writing this piece, I discovered a stronger interest in creative writing within myself than I had been aware of previously.
